FAQ
What is a diabetic foot?
A diabetic foot typically refers to complications in the foot resulting from diabetes. These can include nerve damage (diabetic peripheral neuropathy), poor circulation (peripheral arterial disease), and diabetic foot ulcers.
Diabetic foot complications often occur in individuals with poorly controlled blood sugar levels, or longstanding history of diabetes. A person with other diabetic complications, such as retinopathy or kidney disease, also has higher risk of developing a diabetic foot complication.
How can I prevent diabetic foot complications?
- Control your diabetes. A good blood sugar control is the primary and most important factor in preventing any diabetic foot complication.
- Attend your annual diabetic foot screening with your diabetes nurse or podiatrist. You may need more than one foot screening in a year if you have a higher risk of developing a diabetic foot complication.
- Check and inspect your feet daily. You may use a mirror to help you look for any cuts, open wounds, or unusual lesions. Seek medical attention immediately if you noticed any unusual appearance or any wounds that are healing within 1 to 2 weeks.
- Always wear supportive shoes that provide sufficient cushioning and covers your feet. It is also important to wear slippers at home, especially one that covers the toes to protect yourself from any cuts or injuries.
- Clean and cover any open wounds with sterile dressings. This will prevent any severe foot infections from developing.
When should I see a diabetic foot specialist?
If you notice any unusual changes in your feet, such as open wounds, redness, swelling, numbness, or pain, it is crucial to see a specialist immediately to prevent further complications. Avoiding delay is the key to saving legs, so do not wait before seeking help.
What does a multidisciplinary diabetic foot clinic do?
Unlike a usual clinic setting where you will only see a specific medical professional or specialist, a multidisciplinary clinic brings together various medical professionals to provide comprehensive care for diabetic foot conditions. At Nobel Diabetic Foot Care, our team consist of Orthopaedic Surgeon and Podiatrists who work closely together to review and manage patient’s conditions. This approach ensures all aspects of your foot health are addressed, from as early as prevention to providing necessary treatment. This will also save you from needing to wait for referrals and multiple appointments, therefore there is minimal delay to treatment.
Multidisciplinary care is a research-proven strategy in improving the outcomes of diabetic foot complication. You can read this article to understand more about the approach.
What are the treatment options for diabetic foot conditions?
The treatment options largely depend on your presenting condition. For treatment of a non-complex diabetic foot ulcer, an evidence-based wound management and offloading devices are necessary. However, for complex complications such as Charcot foot, peripheral arterial disease or diabetic foot infections, admission and surgical intervention may be necessary.
